Objective: Asking and answering powerful questions about themes in nonfiction text.

It’s a busy day today.

Today, we are going to experiment with a new visible thinking routine. This one is called “Question Starts” and it’s a good way to start thinking with questions that matter and that could lead you somewhere.

Part 1: Thinking About Alien Planets

1. Read Today’s Newsela Story on the discovery of seven earth-like planets around a nearby star.

2. Just Starting (JF <One Post with 3 Questions>): In one discussion post, brainstorm at least one thoughtful question about the issues in the article from each group below. (You will choose one of these to ask your class).

  • Why…?
  • How would it be different if…?
  • What are the reasons…?
  • Suppose that…?
  • What if…?
  • What if we knew…?
  • What is the purpose of…?
  • What would change if…?

3. Planetary Thinking (J Q&A): Choose the question from your “Just Starting” assignment that is deepest, thought-provoking, and important. (And answer two or more of your classmates’ thinking questions with thoughtful answers!)

Part 2: Thinking About Immigration in 2017

1. Read today’s Newsela Story about the current mood in immigrant communities.

2. Starting Again (JF <One Post with 3 Questions>): In one discussion post, brainstorm at least one thoughtful question about the issues in the article from each group below.

  • What if…?
  • What if we knew…?
  • What is the purpose of…?

3. Immigration Thinking (J Q&A): Choose the question from your “Starting Again” assignment that is most deep, thought-provoking, and important. (And answer two or more of your classmates’ thinking questions with thoughtful answers!)
